Subject: Latest Image Submission Instsructions
Posted: Tue Nov 13, 2007 4:09 pm (GMT -5)
Topic Replies: 0

Hello everyone,

Please submit your images for the first competition of the year by uploading your images to my smugmug account per the instructions below. Please follow these instructions exactly to ensure that I get your images!

The basics steps are 1) select your images, 2) prepare your images and 3) upload them to my smugmug account. The sections below describe each of these steps in detail.

SELECTING YOUR IMAGES
1. The topics for the first competition are "Nature" and "Open." To qualify,
nature images should be shots of, you guessed it!, nature. Be careful not
to include cultivated flowers or constructed elements in your images. Some
judges will disqualify any image that includes built, constructed, or
manufactured elements, including cultivated plants and flowers. The "Open"
category is just that, open to any image you want to submit.

2. You may submit up to three images total to the competition, no more than two in any one category. If you
submit two images to the Nature category, you may submit one image to the open competition, and vice versa.

PREPARING YOUR SELECTED IMAGES
1. After selecting your images, make a copy of each so you don't destroy or
alter your original. If your original is a jpg file, just copy it. Don't
open it and resave it since that will degrade your image.

2. Once you have your copies, resize the images so that they are no larger
than 768 pixels on their longest side.

There is a lot of software available to resize images. If you use a PC, try
Irfanview, which is freely available at http://www.irfanview.com/. If you
use a Mac, try Apple's supplied iPhoto software.

3. If you haven't done so already, convert your image file to the jpeg
format. If necessary, convert your image to the sRGB color space prior to
saving it as a jpeg.

For more information about "color space" and related issues, such as
color space conversion, you can check out:
http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/color_management.htm , or
http://www.digitaldog.net/files/AssignConvert_Tutorial.pdf, or
http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/20040404.html.

4. Rename these jpeg files using the following convention:

Subject (nature, textures, open, etc)_your initials_photo title.jpg

For example, I might title an image: Open_AES_shoddyshot.jpg

If you want your images to be viewed or displayed in a certain order,
number them as follows:

Open_AES1_shoddyshot.jpg,
Open_AES2_shoddyshot.jpg,
Open_AES3_shoddyshot.jpg, etc.

This naming convention is important. It makes it possible for a simple name
sort of all
files to produce a list sorted by topic, photographer, and series.

Don't forget to include the underscores ("_") in your image name. The
underscores contribute to the sort order.

5. Other Notes of Note
- don't subit images with borders.
- you may place a copyright for your image in an EXIF or IPTC field, but
please do not watermark your images.

UPLOADING YOUR IMAGES
1. After preparing your images according to the instructions above, open a
new email message in your email program (if possible, format this message in
plain text and not html).
2. Attach your image files to the email.
2. Address your email to avitch@email.smugmug.com .
3. cc the message to avitch@gmail.com
3. Type the following in the subject line: nccsubmission
4. Type your name and only your name in the message body (nothing else
please!)
5. Send the message.

Your images will automatically be added to an "in-box" gallery that will
become the show or competition gallery.

If you have questions about any of this, please email me. If necessary, I'll
add the question to the Club's excellent forum,
http://www.newtoncameraclub.org/discuss/ , so we can sort them out together.

Thank you in advance for following these directions.
NCC!

Here's the thread to post specific program ideas and discuss/refine them. One idea per post, but post as many times as you like.

If possible, please answer the following three questions about the program idea:
- What's the topic of the program?
- Who would present it?
- If the presenter is from outside the club, do I have a connection to him/her and would I be willing to make the intro to the club?
(Note: don't get in touch with anyone yet; we want to balance the overall season first.)

Let's make the '07-'08 season the best yet starting with great programming.

Thanks -
Hi!
Well, several people have shown interest in shooting the race this weekend, including Amy, and maybe Rebecca and maybe Marshall. I'm going to tentatively say lets meet up at 11am (carpool from my house and head towards Amy's?), and then try the Newton Lower Falls area first, and then head to Bridge Street by around noon. Maybe with a stop by the Kayak and Canoe place on Route 30 in between. So...Newton Lower Falls then Route 30/90/95 intersection, then Bridge Street. That's my suggestion. Please let me know if you are coming and where you want me to look for you along the route or to meet up. Email me if you can't post on the forum.

The kayak and canoe race called Run of the Charles is this weekend.
There is some more info at this website:
http://www.crwa.org/index.html?wavestop.html&0

On their site is a pdf that can be downloaded which gives good viewing locations and times. The pros start coming through Hemlock Gorge around 10:50am, and they start to pass Bridge Street in Nonantum around noon. There are several other viewing areas along the route--places for viewing them in the river, including areas where some tend to spill, and places to view them portaging around the dams.

Who would like to go photograph the racers? Where and when?

Hi!
Yep, looks like it is just you and me, so I guess no field trip this weekend. Not sure why we've had so little interest so far. Perhaps people are just busy this weekend, and last weekend was lousy weather. I'm pretty busy next weekend, but maybe after that...

Next weekend is the Daffodil Festival on Nantucket, which looks really fun, especially with the Antique car parade, but I'll be at the Vincent Laforet workshop instead (www.cipne.org).

From the lack of responses, I guess the trip tomorrow (4/21) is off.

I was going to respond here yesterday, but hadn't yet been added to the legitimate members list. For future planning purposes, here is the gist of my message.

I'd still like to go to the Butterfly Place some time.
I don't think $16/head is too exorbitant for two hours of private time.

I've never visited Wolf Hollow, so I have no idea what it's like, but it
might be interesting. Has anyone done photography there?

Well, to get in early, they now require an $80 minimum deposit, and it costs $16 per person to get in early (8am). We could go in at 10am, but then it would be hard to use tripods, because they will be so busy the next few weekends (because of school vacation in Mass. and then in NH).

I think we should postpone this trip and try for something else this coming weekend.

Option 1: Go to Wolf Hollow instead. They are open this weekend.

Option 2: Do a field trip to the North End. We could go midafternoon, do street photography in late afternoon light, and maybe make a reservation for dinner after. If we do it on Saturday, there will be lots of people around and activity for street photography.

Please, if you are interested in a field trip this weekend, respond and tell me what you'd like to do.

Shall we go to the Butterfly Place this coming Saturday? Usually the way we do it is we call to see if they will let us in about an hour early, so we can have free reign to use our tripods without getting in people's way, and so we can get there while the butterflies are still sluggish as they wake up.

Please let me know if you would like to go.
http://www.butterflyplace-ma.com/
They open at 10am, and the cost per person is $9.00. If they let us, we will try to get in by 9am, which means meeting around 8am for the drive out to Westford.

It turned out to be a beautiful day on Saturday! But we didn't have any field trips, because we had already canceled because we thought it would rain, and almost no one expressed interest in going out anyway. We will try for Wolf Hollow again some other time, since it could be an interesting trip. Perhaps combined with a trip to Ipswich.

Hi,
Well, we are having an issue with the weather, which appears to be bad the entire weekend. Saturday may be the best day, but Wolf Hollow says they are closed in the rain. Therefore, we should probably not risk Wolf Hollow this weekend.

Instead of Wolf Hollow, I suggest perhaps a trip to Battle Road in Concord where they are going to be having reenactors and festivities all day. Here is more info:
http://www.battleroad.org/

Depending on the rain situation, perhaps we'd go the same time we would have gone to Wolf Hollow? Let me know if anyone is interested.

For the Marathon on Monday, let's meet at 11am at Nonantum Library to carpool over to the marathon route to take photos of front-runners and the huge pack as they come through. As for where to go along the marathon route--Heartbreak Hill is always good, but maybe it would be interesting this time to go farther downtown? If people are up for it, I will try to figure out where we can go and where to park.

Keep in mind, if you live SOUTH of the marathon route, you may not be able to meet us at Nonantum Library! Let me know if that is the case, and we'll figure out where to meet along the route.

So, RSVP on the forum if you are interested in doing the Marathon part of Monday's field trips.

Hi,
At the meeting we pointed out that this Saturday is also the day of the Yankee Photographic Workshop, and also Photographica is this weekend. I personally am not planning to do the Gloucester part of the trip, but Moira will be there as she is staying in Gloucester for the weekend. I'm also not going to Yankee or Photographica (would like to, but don't want to spend money on more equipment right now).

So, for Gloucester, if anyone is interested in going up for sunrise, please post to the forum and see if others want to go, and then you can decide when and where to meet to car pool.

For Wolf Hollow--I am planning to go. Tickets are sold starting at 1pm, and the hour-long presentation starts at 1:30. Wolf Hollow is in Ipswich (I said Essex before--oops), so it will take us a little over an hour to get there. If you want to go to Wolf Hollow only (and not Gloucester before), let's meet at 11:45 at the Nonantum Library (I think parking is available farther down Bridge Street). Please RSVP on the forum if you are coming.
