Digging: The Workers of Boston's Big Dig

Michael Hintlian

Michael’s  photo-documentary, “Digging: The Workers of Boston’s Big Dig”, was a personal project during which he accepted no assignments involving the Big Dig. This project became a turning point in his voice and approach to photography.

 

Throughout his presentation, Michael will include the technical, philosophical, & visual features of his photography of the Big Dig project.

Michael Hintlian Bio

Michael Hintlian is a photographer based in Boston.  He was educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and studied with Bill Burke and Jim Dow.  He won a Traveling Scholarship from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. 

 

Hintlian’s work has appeared in major U.S. dailies and international periodicals, and has been widely exhibited and collected.  His photo-documentary "Digging: The Workers of Boston’s Big Dig" was published in 2004. 

 

He is currently at work on major projects in the United States and travels extensively.  Hintlian has served on the faculties of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The New School for Social Research, and Parsons School of Design, New York.  Currently he heads Documentary Photography at New England School of Photography in Boston.
