It only takes a fraction of a second to capture a sports photo, but it can take an entire game, season, or lifetime for an initial vision to develop into the final photo. Increasing the chances of capturing great moments takes previsualization, practice, and a little bit of luck. Setting an intention and vision before a shoot is the best way to come away with images you'll be proud of.
