Opus Magic Landscapes

Submission Deadline:

Magic Landscapes is an exhibition of seven magical composite landscape photographs by Amy Oppenheimer. The exhibit honors Amy’s 10-year stint leading a committee to organize, curate, and hang the Newton Camera Club’s print shows. Thank you, Amy, for all you did!

Amy has been a photographer since childhood. She began around the age of 10 when her father handed her a black box with a big red square on it, and she did what kids usually do with a camera – point it at things and see what you get.  Twenty years later she bought her first SLR and hasn’t looked back, now shooting with a Nikon mirrorless and her iPhone.

Along the way, Amy did some darkroom work and started buying many telephoto lenses because that she loves detail shots she takes with these lenses. As Amy states, "I never met a telephoto lens I didn't like and, to this day, I don’t know what to do with a wide-angle lens!”

A self-taught photographer, Amy has taken a lot of photography workshops, mainly in the Southwest, the Adirondacks and Maine because she enjoys the camaraderie and the different images that are taken in the same area. She can often be seen shooting locally while out walking her dog.

After years of photographing fragments and deliberately avoiding postcard-style images, Amy found herself needing a new creative direction. Inspired by a friend who creates beautifully layered shots with her iPhone and fueled by her own interest in multiple exposures, she began experimenting with double and even triple exposures.

This past summer, marked by unbearable heat and challenging family issues, she relied heavily on her iPhone for photography. The magic landscape images that emerged were all captured using the iPhone’s native camera and primarily edited in Snapseed, her go-to app, with occasional tweaks in the default iPhone camera’s photo editor.
