Welcome back everyone! We have an interesting program planned for this season including many familiar favorite activites plus a few new twists. As always, we'll have our Summer Mini Show, external speakers, and four critiqued competitions. Check the Schedule for all the details.
The main change for this season involves our print shows. As most of you have heard, the West Newton Cinema is being renovated, so we will not be able to hold a show there this November. They have assured us that we can have our regular exhibit slot back next year. We are in negotiations for an alternate venue, but as of now this is not confirmed. We do have two new venues, both in brand new buildings. The first is in the new Opus Newton senior living facility. We will have an ongoing exhibit on a single wall in a high-traffic area to hang between 5 and 7 works. Our plan is to change the photos every two to three months. Our first exhibit in this space will be a solo exhibit of photos by Amy Oppenheimer which will be in place for the facility opening later this month. The club is honoring Amy's service as our print show coordinator as she steps down from the position after many years and numerous successful exhibits. Thanks, Amy! Ellen Foust and Helen Makadia are taking over exhibit planning and thanks in advance to them too.Â
The second new venue is the Cooper Center for Active Living which is the combined home for Newton’s Parks, Recreation & Culture Department and Newton's Older Adult Services. This is a large facility that will host community events, classes, and other programming. The Newton Camera Club has teamed up with the Newton Art Association and the Newton Watercolor Society to organize art exhibits for the Center. The first exhibit, which will coincide with the yet-to-be announced grand opening, will feature work from all three organizations. For this first show, we will be able to hang approximately 15 pieces. But the good news is, that in subsequent years, NCC will have a standing exhibit slot each May and June and will be able to present a large show of 60 or 70 pieces. For the grand opening show, we will set up a jurying process to select a coherent set of images that represent the many talents within our club.
In other news, the Club has decided to drop out of the Multi-Club Competition. We are actively working on a new event that will replace the Multi-Club Member Discussion, which has been one of our more popular events (far more popular than the competition itself, as it turns out). One idea is to work together to curate a year's worth of exhibits at the Opus facility, but for now, that's a place-holder in our schedule.
We are also planning to revive the Friendly Critiques that we piloted two seasons ago, and also hope to plan a few field trips. These events depend on volunteers to help run them. If you’re interested in helping out, let us know. We love new volunteers, and will help you be successful.Â
As always, if you have questions, suggestions, feedback, or want to volunteer, don't hesitate to get in touch by emailing info@NewtonCameraClub.org.
