Guardians of the Steppe: The Mongolian Bankhar Dogs
Julianne traveled to Mongolia to document the bankhar — ancient livestock guardian dogs which co-evolved over centuries to protect livestock herds from wolves and snow leopards on the open steppe. But this isn't a story simply about dogs. It's about what happens when ancient nomadic way of life comes under pressure from global superpowers, industrialization, changing land-use, and a warming climate. What gets lost — and is worth saving — when the traditions tied to that land that define a people start to disappear.
Julianne will talk about how the project came together, the realities of documenting a nomadic culture as an outsider, and what it takes to earn trust in communities far from home. And how this project ties into a theme that runs through most of her work: the bonds between nature, communities and individuals, how integral they are and what happens when those bonds are strained.
She'll also share her broader journey as a documentary photographer, along with the practical side of this kind of field work: logistics, funding, gear, and what it actually takes to engage in a project like this.
Julianne Snow Gauron
Julianne Snow Gauron is a Boston-based documentary photographer, filmmaker, and journalist whose work has taken her from the Somali Region of Ethiopia to the Marshall Islands. A member of The Explorers Club, she has spent her career following stories to the world's most remote and remarkable places, where nature and human lives are intertwined. Julianne’s work explores the living web of nature, community, and self — what those bonds look like when they hold, and what happens when they have been forced apart.
An AP contributor, her photography and writing have appeared in the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, PBS NewsHour, ABC News, Bloomberg TV, and POLITICO Pro Climate, and Sidetracked Magazine among others. Her film work has been recognized by Adweek winning an Arc Award. With more than a decade as an industrial designer in the innovation space, and faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design, she brings unique research abilities to her visual work.
She has lived in England, Ireland, Italy, India, and the Marshall Islands, and travels widely as a journalist and visual artist. Julianne has served on the New England board of ASMP and the Explorers Club, is a Guest Photographer aboard The World Residences, a Fjallraven wear tester, and a Global Rescue rep.
