Auburndale, MA

Speakers:

Elisif Brandon & Marshall Goff, NCC

In a world where an endless barrage of imagery is often bypassed after mere seconds on bright but tiny screens, prints remain an expressive and durable way to experience a photograph.

We’re going to talk about prints and printing — why we print, how we print, and some of the techniques that help photographs look their best in this most enduring form of sharing photography.

  • Do you want to print yourself, or work with a service?

  • What are all these different ways you print, and all these different papers you can print on?

  • How big can you print — and how big should you?

  • Do you really need to care about color management?

  • What the heck is local contrast?

You’re an important part of this conversation, so here are two things to do right now:

  1. Send us your questions. What’s hardest about printing for you? What keeps you from getting into it? What would you most like to learn? Submit questions via this form: https://forms.gle/gYnRwNaz9x84ULqU8

  2. Take advantage of a free print offer! Digital Silver Imaging is offering free small prints to those attending in person. Next week, we’ll share the upload link and full details. So pick something out you’d like to take from your screen to the real world. (Offer limited to in-person pickup at the meeting.)

We strongly encourage people to attend in person if at all possible, because there will be some physical print examples, and those won’t be meaningfully visible online.

Eric Luden and Joe Frio, Digital Silver Imaging

Digital Silver Imaging (DSI) is the innovative photo lab behind the patented DSI Digital Silver Print®, printing digital files directly onto black & white silver gelatin photographic paper through specialized laser technology. This internationally recognized studio in Belmont, Massachusetts also offers premium color pigment printing, expert mounting, custom framing, high-resolution digitization, and comprehensive finishing services. Their work graces prestigious institutions including the MFA Boston, Chicago Art Institute, The Smithsonian, and Musée de la Photographie in Belgium to name only a few. DSI actively supports photographers by providing pro bono support for select exhibitions, educational programs, and community events.

Eric Luden is the founder and CEO of Digital Silver Imaging.  Luden started Digital Silver Imaging after leaving Ilford Photo where he was a VP of Marketing. Luden has a long history of innovation and involvement in the photo industry. Luden started in photo retail management and has served on the boards of The Griffin Museum of Photography and the Social Documentary Network.

Joe Frio is the Printing and Digitization Manager at Digital Silver Imaging. After attending the New England School of Photography, he went on to work both freelance and for the school as an educator and technician, primarily focusing on post-processing and printing. He has also worked as a technical and creative consultant in the New England art community, as well as having been a president of a local multimedia artist collective. His passion for creating and supporting physical media has led him to become an expert digital and analog printer, who occasionally dabbles in alternative processes.

Elisif Brandon and Marshall Goff, Newton Camera Club

Elisif Brandon is a member and past president of the Newton Camera Club. She served for several years as a teaching assistant for Sue Anne Hodges at New England School of Photography for evening printing workshops.  She prints photos for some Newton Camera Club members and other local photographers and has been printing her own work for over 20 years.  Elisif started her own business as a professional architectural photographer in 2006, after discovering her passion for photographing buildings.

You already know him, because Marshall Goff has been part of NCC for most of two decades. He has also judged both digital and print competitions at other camera clubs for several years, and somehow isn't hated by every club in the area yet. At least not that they have told him. Marshall’s photographs have been used on CD covers, promotional posters, and in magazines, including putting sports images on the cover of the national magazine of the Ultimate Players Association and in Men’s Health (Germany). He has been the official photographer for the Boston Poetry Slam and the Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra. When he’s not shooting, reading about, or looking at photography, Marshall plays guitar instead, and also coaches and plays ultimate Frisbee, which is why his knees are sore.
